About this print
Josephine Cochran, tired of servants chipping her china, built a machine to do the job better: wire racks sized to each dish, turned through jets of hot water. Her 1886 patent (US355,139) is the direct ancestor of the modern dishwasher, which she went on to manufacture herself.
