Charles and Ray Eames spent the 1940s learning to bend plywood into compound curves, first for wartime leg splints, then for furniture. This patent (US2,554,490) covers the molded chair that came out of it: a seat and back shaped to the body, carried on rubber shock mounts. Mid-century design starts about here.
