About this print
Filed in 1903 and granted three years later, the Wright brothers' flying-machine patent (US821,393) is not for an engine or a propeller but for control: the wing-warping and rudder system that let a pilot actually steer through the air. It is the idea, more than the Kitty Hawk flight itself, that the brothers spent years defending in court.
