The two men grip each other's belts and push, bodies folded into one knot of shoulders and thighs, with the straw ring of the dohyo behind them and their names written boldly overhead. Katsushika Hokusai designed the print around 1783, early in his career when he still signed himself Shunro, in the narrow hosoban format that suited standing figures. The wrestlers are Wadagahara Jinshiro and Kachozan Gorokichi. It is a woodblock print in ink and colour, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it and releases it into the public domain. Its tall shape suits a narrow wall or a pair with its companion. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
Printed on 200 gsm enhanced matte art paper using archival pigment inks (giclée process). Framed prints use a classic moulded gallery frame in your chosen colour finish; the glazing is shatter-resistant acrylic. Made to order for you, in your colours.
