About this print
W. L. Burn painted just the one fruit, letting the freckled green skin and a small soft shadow do all the work against the empty sheet. The apple is a Belleflower, grown at Watsonville in Santa Cruz County, California, and the plate is dated 1 March 1909. It was made for the US Department of Agriculture's pomological watercolour programme, which from 1886 to 1942 kept a studio of artists recording fruit varieties for the department's files, an archive of some seven and a half thousand sheets now held by the USDA National Agricultural Library, in the public domain. The green sits beautifully against white walls and pale timber, in a kitchen, bedroom, or office. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
