About this print
Bertha Heiges painted the Willowmeade on 21 November 1896, barely a decade into the US Department of Agriculture's pomological watercolour programme, and the plate shows the format already settled: the apple whole, red striping over gold, then split to the core so the flesh, seeds, and cavity could be recorded. The specimen was grown at Port Jervis in Orange County, New York, and the handwritten record keeps its place in the lower margin. Heiges contributed hundreds of sheets to the collection now preserved in the USDA National Agricultural Library, in the public domain. The soft reds and creams give it an heirloom warmth that suits a kitchen or hallway. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
