About this print
Mary Daisy Arnold painted the Nickajack on 13 January 1913 from a specimen grown at Wilkesboro in Wilkes County, North Carolina, deep in the apple country the old Southern variety came from. The fruit is given whole, striped crimson over yellow, and then halved, the knife passing straight through the open core so the seeds sit visible in their chambers. Arnold spent decades painting for the US Department of Agriculture's pomological watercolour programme, which documented American fruit varieties from 1886 until 1942. Her sheet is preserved in the USDA National Agricultural Library and is now in the public domain. It has the settled, wintery warmth of a farmhouse kitchen, and hangs well in one. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
