About this print
Royal Charles Steadman gave the variety two portraits on one sheet, the fruit shown twice so its color range could be recorded honestly, deep crimson on one, more gold breaking through on the other. He painted the Pinnacle in 1919 from specimens grown at Rosslyn in Arlington County, Virginia, as an artist of the US Department of Agriculture's pomological watercolour programme, the fruit-documentation studio the department maintained from 1886 to 1942. Steadman joined late and became one of its steadiest hands. The sheet is held in the USDA National Agricultural Library and is now in the public domain. The paired composition has a pleasing rhythm on a kitchen or living room wall. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
