About this print
Two studies share the sheet: the nut entire, its shell ribbed and mottled brown, and below it a cracked half with the kernel curled inside its chambers. Deborah Griscom Passmore painted the McCallister, a hybrid pecan raised at Washington in Wilkes County, Georgia, in 1904 for the US Department of Agriculture's pomological watercolour programme, which documented American fruit and nut varieties from 1886 to 1942. On paper this ochre-and-cream palette behaves almost as a neutral, which makes it the easiest plate here to place. The original is held by the USDA National Agricultural Library, now in the public domain. It suits a study, a hallway, or a calm kitchen. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
