About this print
The awning stripes set the rhythm and the crates repeat it, each box tipped forward so the fruit reads as rows of bright dots: oranges, grapes, plums, pears, and wedges of watermelon, all cut in flat silkscreen color against black. Artists in the WPA's poster workshops produced it between 1936 and 1941 as a promotional piece, and the Library of Congress copy carries a March 1941 date stamp on the back. Like most WPA posters it is unsigned, the work of a government studio rather than a name. Now in the public domain, it brings that Depression-era optimism straight to a kitchen or breakfast wall.
