About this print
Two props stand in for a whole presidency: the tall black hat and the book it rests on, set against a loose wash of slate blue and mauve. The poster announced a folk festival celebrating Lincoln's New Salem years, held at New Salem State Park over three days in late September, admission free. Albert M. Bender designed it for the Illinois WPA art programme between 1939 and 1943, and his hand shows in the confident simplicity; his posters are among the best remembered of the era. The Library of Congress holds the silkscreen in its WPA Poster Collection, now in the public domain. It suits a study or a reading corner especially well. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
