About this print
The joke lands instantly: on one side a woman deep in a telephone call, on the other the world drawn as a face with an ear, eavesdropping happily on every word, and a banner between them ordering keep mum. WPA artists screen printed it for the Thirteenth Naval District of the United States Navy between 1941 and 1943, part of the home-front campaign against loose talk, and the period paranoia is now half the charm. The Library of Congress holds it in the WPA Poster Collection, in the public domain. Its wide format and navy-and-gold palette suit an office, a hallway, or a garage with a sense of humour. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
