About this print
The smoke itself carries the message, four words rolling out of the freighter's stack in pale letters while a submarine's wake cuts through the swell in the foreground. Don't invite disaster, the red line below adds. WPA artists screen printed it in 1940 for the Thirteenth Naval District of the United States Navy, warning crews that a smoking funnel could be seen for miles; within two years the threat was real on both coasts. The Library of Congress holds it in the WPA Poster Collection, now in the public domain. Its yellow, black, and sea blue read as strongly as any modern graphic, and it suits an office, garage, or hallway with an industrial lean. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
