About this print
The gauntlet says more than the small print: an armoured fist drawn in black with gold edges, looming over the lettering for a lecture on civil liberties in wartime. The speaker was Max Lerner, the American journalist and educator, addressing a city-wide forum at Roosevelt High in Des Moines in January 1940, with Europe already at war and America debating what came next. The Iowa Art Program of the WPA screen printed the poster, and the Library of Congress preserves it, now in the public domain. Its red, black, and gold carry across a room, and the subject has never really gone out of date. It suits an office or a living room with conviction. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
