A whole Valencia orange sits above its own cut half, the peel stippled and glowing, the segments fanned around a pale core. Scientific fruit portraiture at its sunniest.

The plate keeps the programme's classic format: the orange whole above, stippled and glowing, then cut through the middle below so the segments and pith could be recorded as honestly as the peel. Ellen Isham Schutt painted this Valencia, grown at Corona in Riverside County, California, on 19 July 1912 for the US Department of Agriculture's pomological watercolour programme, which from 1886 to 1942 employed artists to document fruit varieties before color photography could. Her specimen number and signature still sit in the margin. The sheet is preserved in the USDA National Agricultural Library and is now in the public domain. It brings a ripe, sunlit warmth to a kitchen or breakfast wall. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
Printed on 200 gsm enhanced matte art paper using archival pigment inks (giclée process). Framed prints use a classic molded gallery frame in your chosen color finish; the glazing is shatter-resistant acrylic. Made to order for you, in your colors.
