About this print
The lower berry is the interesting one, grown so large it has folded into ridges and lobes, and Deborah Griscom Passmore painted it exactly as it came, seeds, ruffles, and all; the pencilled note beneath records where the seed came from. She made the study on 9 June 1897 in Washington, DC, in the first decade of the US Department of Agriculture's pomological watercolour programme, which recorded fruit varieties in watercolour from 1886 to 1942. Passmore became the programme's most celebrated artist, and the reds here show why. The sheet is preserved in the USDA National Agricultural Library, now in the public domain. Its deep scarlet glows against a kitchen or bedroom wall. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
