About this print
The specimen travelled further than most in the collection: this Maharajah mango was grown at Kingston in Jamaica, and Amanda Newton painted it on 7 May 1910 for the US Department of Agriculture's pomological watercolour programme, the department's project to document fruit varieties in accurate watercolour between 1886 and 1942. Newton was among its most prolific artists, and she gives the fruit real weight, the yellow deepening to apricot with a flush of rose where the sun caught it. The sheet, its margin notes intact, is preserved in the USDA National Agricultural Library and is now in the public domain. It warms a living room, kitchen, or bedroom wall like late afternoon.
