About this print
Mary Daisy Arnold painted the Haverland as a botanist would want it: flowers still opening at the top, berries at every stage of ripeness below, the foliage given as much care as the fruit, and a cut berry at the corner to show the pale heart. She made the plate on 17 June 1916 from a specimen grown at College Park in Maryland, one of the small group of women artists who painted most of the US Department of Agriculture's pomological watercolours between 1886 and 1942. The sheet is held by the USDA National Agricultural Library and is now in the public domain. It is gentle, exact, and very easy to live with. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
