About this print
Where most plates in the series isolate a single fruit, Deborah Griscom Passmore painted the whole bough: little calamondins pulling the branch into a curve, white blossom among the leaves, and a halved fruit set into the top corner to show the flesh. Passmore was the finest and most prolific artist of the US Department of Agriculture's pomological watercolour programme, the scientific fruit portraiture the department ran from 1886 to 1942. Her specimen came from Miami in Dade County, Florida, and she dated the sheet in January 1909 in her own hand. It is held by the USDA National Agricultural Library, now in the public domain, and it makes a kitchen wall feel warmer instantly. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
