About this print
The honesty is the charm: every freckle, bruise, and split in the skin is recorded, because the point of the plate was accuracy, not appetite. Ellen Isham Schutt painted this pair of Dacca bananas on 31 August 1906 from a specimen grown at Miami in Dade County, Florida, working for the US Department of Agriculture's pomological watercolour programme, the fruit-documentation studio the department ran from 1886 to 1942 in the years before color photography. Her signature and the variety name are still inked into the lower margin. The watercolour is held by the USDA National Agricultural Library and is now in the public domain. It brings a grin to a kitchen, a hallway, or a child's room. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
