About this print
The two rivals share a single medallion, bust portraits face to face the way they never quite were on stage, ringed by lettering and stars like the face of a commemorative coin. The occasion was a reenactment of the Lincoln and Douglas debate, staged at West Chicago on August 27th as part of the DuPage County centennial of 1939, one of a whole series the WPA workshops screen printed for that celebration. The mustard ground and two-color economy are pure Federal Art Project house style. The Library of Congress preserves the poster in its WPA collection, now in the public domain. It brings a wry, civic-minded note to an office or hallway. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
