Each row takes the swing a little further: the pick lifted from the ground, raised high above the head, brought down in an arc and pulled free again, the whole body bending and straightening with it. Eadweard Muybridge made the study at the University of Pennsylvania between 1884 and 1886 as part of his survey of everyday actions, and published it in Animal Locomotion in 1887. Photographs like this one fed straight into how painters drew labour and effort for decades after. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds the plate and makes it available as public domain. Nearly square, it hangs well on its own. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
Printed on 200 gsm enhanced matte art paper using archival pigment inks (giclée process). Framed prints use a classic moulded gallery frame in your chosen colour finish; the glazing is shatter-resistant acrylic. Made to order for you, in your colours.
