About this print
The format is a tall sliver, and every inch of it is used: white mallow blooms at the top, the oriole gripping the stem at mid-height, and the big coral flower flaring at the base against an arc of deep blue. Utagawa Hiroshige designed this bird-and-flower woodblock print around 1834, and this impression is held in the Met's open-access collection, now in the public domain. Narrow verticals like this are the answer to walls other art refuses: between windows, beside a mirror, in the gap at the end of a kitchen run. It brings color without claiming floor-to-ceiling attention. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
