About this print
The bird holds the center in golds and umbers, tail sweeping down through dark teal leaves, while the hibiscus flowers open flat like parasols on either side. That graded red sky is the kind of printing flourish woodblock artists prized, and it gives the whole sheet its warmth. Utagawa Hiroshige designed Hibiscus Mutabilis and Jay around 1840, and the woodblock print now sits in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's open-access collection, in the public domain. It flatters warm rooms: a living room with terracotta or rust in its textiles, a bedroom with brass and dark wood, a kitchen wall clear of the steam. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
