About this print
The road bends between grassy banks and cottages, a small party of travellers midway along, while two great pines lean out of the right margin and Mount Fuji rises white and calm behind everything. The scene is Kambara, one of the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido, from an edition of Utagawa Hiroshige's series that sets a poem into the sky above each view. This impression is early twentieth century, a woodblock print from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's open-access collection, now in the public domain. Its fresh greens and open blue sky suit a hallway, a kitchen, or any room that wants an easy outlook. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
