About this print
The composition stacks upward the way only a pillar print can: red-hulled boats and their rigging in the foreground, the low island behind, then birds strung across a sky fading from gold into dusk. The Japanese title, Tsukudajima no Oborozuki, refers to the hazy moon over Tsukuda, the fishing island at the mouth of Edo's Sumida River. Utagawa Hiroshige designed the woodblock print, and this impression is held in the Met's open-access collection, now in the public domain. Its narrow format slots beside a doorway, at the end of a hallway, or on the slice of wall a bookcase leaves free. Printed to order at gallery scale in its own fixed palette.
